As a self-diagnosed shopaholic, it somewhat surprised me to find that not shopping can be almost as addicting. I gave shopping up for the year in 2018 and that helped me parse out what I really needed and what I bought because it was on sale (hello, good deals are the universe saying ‘you need it’) or were seemingly necessary for one night out but will never get worn again because I’ve already posted 47 pics in it. I used to get things that I didn’t really need and then end up returning or reselling things and it just took up so much of my damn time and mental and physical space so I had to kick the habit to the curb.
The 72-hour rule helped me break this. If I’m considering buying anything other than necessities, I have to wait 72 hours before I let myself check out. I still add things to my cart, but don’t purchase until after 72 hours and only if I can afford it and know it will get LOTS of use. Enacting this rule has created a huge shift on what I buy and how much stuff I bring into our small house and also a huge shift in my stress. Too much stuff = too much stress.
Still there are obvi things I can not live without and they are as follows:
1. Simple jewelry. A little sparkle really adds some interest to an outfit and when you have simple outfits, jewelry becomes that much more important. I am a huge fan of Gorjana because they make timeless yet modern pieces that are high-quality but still affordable. This shell necklace for example is only $60 and it’s nice and heavy and feels and looks like it’s much more expensive than it is.
2. Maxi dresses. They are chic, comfortable and just. one. piece. To me, there is nothing easier than a breezy maxi especially when I am home in LA where I luckily can wear them year round. This one is super-affordable and from a recently discovered brand that just makes perfect pieces for warmer days (more from Beach Lunch Lounge here). The key to maxis for me is to get ones you can dress up or down so they really get tons of wear.
3. A versatile ‘non-gym’ shoe. If you read the blog often you may think I exclusively own gym shoes but that’s not totally true! I love a good shoe that can be worn with everything from maxi dresses to denim shorts. These shoes are ethically made, super high-quality and are versatile AF. The leather is super tight at first so definitely size up at least half a size but maybe even a full size. I got a half size up but they are still a little tight and I wish I got a full-size up!
4. A cute ‘mom’ bag. You know I am carrying 28 toy cars, 35 lipsticks, SPF 50 and loads of snacks so I always need a large bag! I picked one up at the Clare V. Sample Sale this year and I have been carrying it everywhere. I am linking some similar ones below along with some beautiful jewelry and a dress just like this!
