Happy International Women’s Day! I love this special day and always enjoy taking a moment to reflect and write about the current state of women in sports. Last year, I wrote about my daughter and how being active is a shared interest that I feel so lucky to have with her. She still keeps me fit…it’s all the chasing. This year, I am very excited to share a foundation that helps female athletes become even more successful. Adidas and iFundWomen have partnered up on a She Breaks Barriers campaign to ensure female athletes have the opportunity for funding that is often missed by traditional venture capital groups! This one hits close to home because I am a female entrepreneur and also because my husband (whom I often call ‘The Banker’ on the blog) is indeed a banker who shares a lot about the companies his bank has the opportunity to work with and well, I am sensitive to this issue but, a whole heck of a lot of them are founded by, you guessed it, men.
Of course, I’m not out here boycotting (wait…shall I call it ‘girlcotting’ today?) male-run companies. They’re wonderful and there are so many out there doing amazing things for women, but I love to support women where I can. I am really impressed when organizations go out of their way to support women. In honor of International Women’s Day, Adidas and iFundWomen are taking action to level the playing field for all kinds of different female entrepreneurs making a difference for women in sports. They’re already helping women like Alex Taylor, a New York City-based entrepreneur who founded Hoop York City, an inclusive basketball community seeking to provide women with safe spaces to play basketball by giving them grants to help them grow their businesses.
I feel so fortunate that I get to talk to my daughter about her hopes and dreams for the future and share the incredible things women are doing to make the world a better place for her generation. I hope when she is an adult, men and women are equally represented as founder/CEO and C-level execs in the workforce and that female athletes make just as much (or more!) than men. Until then, it’s all systems go and full speed ahead for women making a difference in business and in sports!
