After hearing there was a new fitness craze that involved yoga, disco balls and core training, The Banker and I had to try it. We were lucky enough to get a private Surfset class at Sweat Republic SF and the experience was anything but ordinary.
Neither of us are expert surfers, but we love to shake things up so we kicked off our shoes and bid adieu to stability for 45 minutes. Right away, I presumed Surfset was rather hip because there was a disco ball on the ceiling and our friend Jason, the instructor, was playing a ‘Coachella playlist’.
We began with a series of yoga poses on the board — it took some time and gentle reassurance before my downward dog felt less like ‘drowning fish’. Once I composed myself, I kind of understood how all surfers seemingly have washboard abs.
Next was a series of jumping, squatting and running. We mimicked running out to the surf, paddling out to a wave and riding waves to shore. If this doesn’t get your heart-rate (and imagination) pumping, I don’t know what will.
We ended with a ‘challenge pose’.
Back bends or crow. Surprisingly, crow was much easier.
*Huge thanks to Jason and Talia for facilitating this class and watching The Badger so we could surf! You guys are the best.
